About The Event

Come and learn Collegiate Shag with our mates Mark and Soraya from the Cheshire Swing Cats! https://www.cheshireswingcats.com/

You may have seen Mark and Soraya cutting a rug at socials doing this fast paced and energetic dance. Soraya has been dancing a variety of styles for over fifteen years, and teaching for around ten of them. Mark has been dancing for around eleven years and teaching for a little over 6 years. Many of the Swing Cats have been avid collegiate shag dancers since being introduced to the dance in 2014 by Ian & Sheila Hartley. The Cats have expanded their knowledge and skills with Carla and Stuart, Jim & Nicky plus Arnas & Egle, to name but a few.

Collegiate shag is a high tempo swing era dance of the 1920s – 30s. Similar to Lindy hop, it is an American vernacular dance originating within the African American Community community. In the 1930s the double rhythm shag became popular with College crowd, hence the prefix we now use to differentiate from other forms of Shag. The high hand hold, posture, frequent breaks and playfulness make this a distinctive and enjoyable dance style.

The workshop will take place from 12.30pm-3pm with some breaks for water/air/rest!

Cost £10
